Dear Friends,

I hope your fall is off to a great start. I’ve been commuting from Brooklyn to Baltimore this semester teaching composition at the Peabody Institute, which has been a lot of fun, and I wanted to let you know about some of the highlights of my coming year.

This October, Shai Wosner will premiere The Air Suspendeda 16-minute concerto for piano and strings. Thanks to Shai’s tireless advocacy, it will have nine performances this season, with shows in Memphis (Oct. 23), Philadelphia (Oct. 25), New York (Oct. 27), Ithaca (Nov. 23), Phoenix (March 6-8), and Albany (March 14-15), performed by the East Coast Chamber Orchestra, the Cayuga Chamber Orchestra, the Albany Symphony, and the Phoenix Symphony. You can hear us talk about it here.

This March, the Vienna Staatsoper and Vienna Philharmonic will premiere Between Wolves and Dogs, a new ballet I am creating with the choreographer Pontus Lidberg. I’ve long been an admirer of Pontus’s work and am excited to go to Vienna for the first time. It will be heard in five performances from March 4–11, 2020.

I’m also working on a reimagining of Steven Sondheim’s song “Kiss Me” from Sweeney Todd for Anthony De Mare’s Liaisons Project, which will will be heard in performances at Ravinia, the 92nd St Y, and CAP UCLA in March and April 2020.

Further into the season, I’ll be composing The Last Message Received, a new work for chorus and orchestra, commissioned by Northwestern University and my alma mater, Yale (their Glee Club and Symphony Orchestra). And much further out will see the premiere of a new big piece for prepared piano and percussion quartet for pianist Conor Hanick and my dear friends Sandbox Percussion. More information about this soon!

If you haven’t had a chance to listen to my most recent album, The Pieces That Fall to Earthmade in close collaboration with Wild Up and released on New Amsterdam Records, please take a listen. If you are a voting member of the Recording Academy, we humbly submit the work For Your Consideration for this year’s Grammys. Also on the recording front, Ashley Bathgate recently released my collective Sleeping Giant’s Ash, a piece for cello and electronics, also on New Amsterdam.

You can see a full list of performances here! Hope to see you at one of these events!
