I’m so excited about the release of my string orchestra piece, High Windows, as part of the String Orchestra of Brooklyn’s new album, afterimage. We’re doing a CD release show in NYC on January 13 at Roulette (featuring the Argus Quartet), and the whole thing comes into world on the 17th as a CD. The New Yorker recommends!

The album also includes, Stabat Mater Dolorosa, a gorgeous work by my old friend and fellow Sleeping Giant, Jacob Cooper, and features performances by many close collaborators, including violinst Rachel Lee Priday, singers Mellissa Hughes and Kate Maroney, as well as SOB conductor, Eli Spindel. Here’s a little note I wrote about the project:

High Windows reflects a specific period of my life—early 2013—and is a piece written for friends. Eli and I were neighbors. I was workshopping passages of the piece with members of the orchestra, and I’d been longtime collaborators with the original soloists and co-commissioners, the Toomai String Quintet. I knew the church where the work would be premiered and the skills and strengths of the orchestra. Everyone came together to make premiere happen and they’ve come together, again, to make this album happen. The SOB has performed the work four times since its premiere, and many of the people on this recording have played in all four of these performances. In more recent years, the Argus Quartet have become frequent collaborators and champions of my work. All this to say: at the end of the day, High Windows is a piece wrought from friendships. I think this is part of the reason it has been my most performed orchestral work to date—people can hear the special relationships behind the music.
